REFLECTION
When reflecting back on the first day of class and how I had aspired to be sitting in this chair for more than 14 years, I am both proud and overwhelmed at how far I have come. Throughout the first three months (didactic phase) my fight or flight instinct was tested repeatedly. I remember thinking, “there is no way I can do this,” but I was determined to succeed and failure was not an option. By the end of the third month, I had figured out which study technique worked best for me and how best to apply my knowledge to the tests. I took my own advice and focused on one day/test/project at a time. I am exceptionally proud to state that I have not only conquered but shattered my goal GPA of a 3.8; however, now it was time for the clinical phase.
This both terrified and excited me. I can remember practicing my skills in the simulation lab and wondering how I was going to pull all of these moving parts together by myself. Fortunately, I have worked at several student-friendly clinical sites with tons of wonderful anesthesia providers that have assisted me in this process. I started out as an apprehensive student with more than 14 years of NICU experience and now 28 months later I am a confident and empathetic nurse anesthesia provider for neonates, children, adults, and geriatrics. Now exiting this program I look back on my cases and the techniques/skills I have developed over time. I truly believe I have established the fine art of nurse anesthesia and I look forward to further advancing my techniques and being a life-long learner.
