Neonatal ICU - Level III, St. David’s Medical Center

  • Registered Nurse in a 69 bed, level III NICU, provided comprehensive care for critically ill neonates on ventilators with multiple intravenous medication infusions.

  • Worked extensively with oscillators, conventional ventilators, SiPAP, bubble CPAP, and nitric oxide.

  • Managed chest tubes, central venous lines, gastrostomy tubes, umbilical arterial/venous catheters, and wound vacs, provided insertion assistance, maintenance, and discontinuation of lines.

  • Cared for infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernias, tracheostomies, and tracheoesophageal fistulas. Educated families on infant care, medical-surgical procedures, and broad aspects of therapeutic regimens, including medication and pain management techniques.

  • Managed four units (NICU, NBN, L&D, and PP) and 44 employees for a new startup hospital.

  • Hired and trained 15 new employees, ended the use of travelers and contract labor, and saved the budget $250,000 annually.

  • Handled all daily chart audits, unit charges, and staff payroll. Created 86 NICU policies, 58 Newborn policies, and 91 L&D policies. Developed employee education fair in order to complete yearly competencies/check-offs.

  • Initiated a relationship with the Cord Blood Registry (CBR) and Low Apgar Program.

  • Supervised a busy 69 bed, level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Updated and maintained staff scheduling for 140+ employees and prepared daily assignments, paying close attention to nurse/infant ratio and staffing grid.

  • Provided parent education, and oversaw all staff management duties, including training, mentorship, and advisement initiatives. Completed mid-year and annual evaluations for 35 employees.

  • Rounded daily with the multi-disciplinarian team on all NICU infants, to provide consistency of care.

  • Transported infants for MRI, CT, UGI, and Voiding Cystourethrogram(VCUG) procedures.

  • Attended all cesarean sections, high-risk vaginal deliveries, and infant codes within the hospital.

  • Supported nurses during admissions and mentored new nurses on all aspects of infant care.

  • Assisted Neonatologist with procedures, including peripheral arterial line and chest tube placement, lumbar punctures, intubations and circumcisions.

  • Intubated infants, inserted umbilical venous/arterial catheters, and placed PICC lines as needed.

  • Functioned as relief charge and assisted ER/NBN with blood draws and IV starts.
